Boilers seem to have a habit of going on the blink at the worst of times, perhaps in the middle of a surprise spring snowstorm or just as the weather turns colder and you’re considering cranking up the heating. If it’s a time you really need your boiler to be working, you can almost guarantee that that’s when it’ll start acting up. If you need to urgently cover the cost of a boiler repair, we’ve looked into the average repair charges and how to pay the bill if you don’t have the funds to hand.
Average boiler repair costs
There’s a lot to factor in when it comes to boiler repair. You’ll usually pay for the gas engineer’s labour costs per hour, as well as the cost of materials, parts and supplies needed to fix the issue. What you pay can vary widely depending on who you use and whether it’s an emergency call out. There is usually an additional fee for emergency, or out-of-hours services.
Broken boilers really need expert help. You should look for someone who is Gas Safe registered. This is the organisation that makes sure only good, competent and qualified engineers and plumbers are undertaking gas safety work, such as fixing boilers.
Here we highlight some of the most common boiler problems that you may need to get professional help with, and how much these can cost, on average.
Boiler part | What has gone wrong? | Average cost for parts and labour |
---|---|---|
Printed circuit board | You’re likely seeing error messages and the boiler is struggling to process what it needs to do. This means you may need a new circuit board to get it back up and running. | £227 |
Water pump | The pump moves water from the boiler out into the radiators to heat up your home but if it stops working you’ll find that your home is not heating up like it should, as no hot water can be pushed out. | £211 |
Ignition | If you have an older boiler with a pilot light, this ignites and heats up the water to send out to the radiators and taps. If the ignition isn’t working, the flame can’t be ignited, resulting in loss of heating or hot water. | £109 |
Thermocouple | Another older boiler part, the thermocouple is there to stop a gas leak if your pilot light goes out. It can break, which if left, can be dangerous so should be fixed immediately. | £86 |
Pressure relief valve | It’s very important if you notice any large rises or dramatic drops in pressure that you get this fixed straight away. The pressure relief valve is there to regulate the boiler and changes in pressure can be dangerous if the valve isn’t working correctly. | £102 |
New boiler | Sometimes, what’s broken is irreparable or costs more than it’s worth, and you simply need to replace the whole boiler. | £1,500 |
There are a number of ways to fund the repair of your boiler if you don’t have the cash in your main account. Here are some options:
Sell something to find the money – Making a sale on eBay or Facebook marketplace could generate enough to cover the cost of repair work on your boiler. Perhaps sell an old bike you no longer use or an item of furniture you don’t need, then keep the money ready to pay the plumber repairing your boiler.
To avoid the stress of a broken boiler in the future, there are steps you can take to ensure it continues running efficiently and to reduce the likelihood of the need to pay out for boiler repair.
It’s recommended that you get your boiler serviced regularly by a Gas Safe registered engineer to ensure it’s running as efficiently as possible, and pick up on any potential issues before they become a big deal. A routine boiler service costs around £70 but could pay for itself as time goes on, as it reduces the risk of larger parts breaking and causing costly repairs in the future.
If a boiler service identifies an underlying fault, then you’ll need to consider how and when you get it repaired. If it isn’t an emergency, you can compare quotes and arrange for an engineer to come at a convenient time to carry out the repairs. You’ll also have time to work out how to cover the costs and apply for a loan if you need to. Sunny can support you whatever boiler repair you might be faced with, with short-term loans that are repayable over six to 14 months.
While the thought of turning your heating on during a summer heatwave doesn’t seem logical and probably isn’t your idea of fun, it’s essential that you switch on your heating throughout the year to keep the boiler ticking over. Leaving it off for a period and cranking up the thermostat at the first sign of a cold spell can cause your boiler to work harder, straining its mechanisms and potentially leading to something breaking.
Check your radiators are warm from top to bottom; any sign of cold radiators in certain spots suggests that they need bleeding which means you need to release air that’s become trapped in them. You can do this yourself by simply buying a radiator key from a DIY store. Regularly bleeding your radiators ensures the system continues to run properly and avoids straining the boiler as it tries to push water through pockets of air that form in the system over time.
You can check your boiler pressure yourself simply by looking at the gauge on the front. This gauge measures atmospheric pressure, and for a correctly pressurised boiler should read between one and two bars. If it’s too low, or too high, then you may be able to fix this yourself by resetting the pressure. Look in your boiler’s instruction manual or online for a step by step guide on how to do this for your particular model of boiler. If you’re not sure what to do, or if the pressure keeps dropping or increasing even after you’ve reset it, call a Gas Safe registered plumber or engineer.
