Anyone For Tennis? Where To Learn And Play Tennis And Other Sports Cheaply This Summer

The Euros are well underway, Wimbledon has kicked off this week, and the games in Rio are just around the corner. Summer 2016 is undoubtedly a fantastic summer of sport. Even if you’re not a massive fan, it’s impossible not to get caught up in the hype of strawberries and cream, vuvuzelas and medals ceremonies.

The summer’s sports may have inspired you to try something new or revive an old passion. If you fancy yourself as the next Wayne Rooney or Jessica Ennis-Hill and are certain that with a bit of practise, you could be facing the pros next year, why not get out there and have a go? We’ve picked out some of the ways you can learn and play different sports this year. You won’t need expensive memberships or pro trainers!

Football

You don’t have to commit to playing as part of a team to play football. For a completely free option, all you need is a ball, a few friends, and a bit of green space. To play in a slightly more organised environment, though, you could check out the FA’s Just Play scheme to join a kick-about. This costs just a few pounds a session and there’s no commitment. Even if you just decide to go as a one-off, you can have a great time with some friends.

Athletics

Athletics covers all things running, jumping and throwing. You can even race walk as an athletic event! While club memberships can be pricey, many offer free taster sessions. Go and see what it’s all about and decide if it’s something you want to take up more seriously. Find activities in your area with Get Inspired by the BBC and have a go!

Tennis

Fancy giving Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray a run for their money? Try your hand at tennis with Tennis for Free, who run family-friendly weekly sessions around the UK, as well as being able to point you in the direction of free or cheap tennis courts in your area. At their sessions, all equipment is provided so they’re a great way to see if you like the game, or let the kids have a go at something new, without having to invest. And, as if you need any more motivation, the hero of our ads, Sonny, is a keen tennis player. Check out his take on it below:
